Gabor Szabo

Gabor Szabo was one of the most original guitarists to emerge in the sixties. Mixing his heritage in Hungarian folk music with a love for jazz he crafted a distinctive, largely self-taught sound. He escaped Hungary at age 20 and moved to the US, where from 1961-1965 he performed with the Chico Hamilton quintet.

After this period he initiated a solo career in 1966 recording the exceptional "Spellbinder" album. From that album "Gypsy Queen" later became a hit for Santana in 1970.

Spellbinder

In that same year Szabo released two other albums.
One of them, "Jazz Raga", features no one else than Bernard Purdie on the drums and contains jazz interpretations of more popular and latin music.

Walking On Nails

Ten years after, in 1976, there's the "Nightflight" album. Pure bliss, with Dexter Wansel on synths.

Tittle Tattle Woman

Mixed and produced by "a guy called" Gaetano Vituzzi and released in 1983 on the mysterious Italian Superdance label, this first track is one hot piece of italo disco!

Tittle Tattle

When listening to the next two songs I tend to think that the overall feel of "Tittle Tattle" is situated right in between two versions of a favorite song of mine, "Woman".

First up is the original version by Spanish band Barrabas ("Wild Safari", "Mellow Blow", "On The Road Again", "Checkmate", etc). What a song! More than 25 years old it still makes people stomp their feet on that dancefloor and sing together under the balloons.
"Woman" came out in 12” format as a promo and commercial release. Both were done on yellow, green, red and black vinyl which resulted in eight different 12” pressings. This doesn’t mean they’re easy to find though...

Woman

And then there's this incredible 1983 remake by Junior Byron, who's also reknown for "Dance To The Music":
